Broadband in very simple terms just means an easy method to connect to the internet. The term literally means a prominent broadcasting spectrum of telecommunications technology. It is an advanced version of dial-up connections. The major differences are in the speed of connectivity and ease of work. It is one of the most sought after and growing technologies of the world.
In the earlier dial-up connections using telephones, one could not browse the internet and use telephone simultaneously. With the arrival of broadband which uses different aspects of wired and wireless technology, this problem was solved. Dial-up connections are very slow compared to the speed of broadband connections. In the beginning when broadband was introduced, there were many problems in terms of connectivity, speed etc. Within a short span of time, all these were rectified and broadband revolutionized the cyber world.
The most prominent and popular among broadband-based technologies are ADSL and cable internet service. Though these were costly at one point of time, now any ordinary person is able to afford the facility. The new technologies which are introduced and now promise to rule the scenario are WiFi, WiMAX, and VDSL.
The speed factor needs to be analyzed more. A normal broadband system is said to be ten folds faster than usual dial-up connections. A fully efficient broadband connection can be hundreds of time faster than dial-up. The user friendliness of broadband is another factor which attracts people to it.
Technologies like WiMAX and WiFi have even reached the rural pockets of the world. So, internet accessibility is no longer a problem in most parts of the world. Mobile broadband technology allows you to access the internet while you are on the move. The arrival of broadband has already altered or boosted the economies of various firms and has inspired many firms to come up.
